‘Pie of the Day’ is a short film about Phil, a middle manager on his lunch break trying to treat himself with some chippy, only to be thwarted by Hilda, the elderly woman behind the counter who seems intent on misunderstanding everything Phil says and making the experience as unpleasant as possible. The story takes place in ‘The Narwhal,’ a chippy based on ‘The Dolphin,’ the local chippy growing up. The original idea of a customer being tormented by a senile woman in a chippy came from a script written by a close friend. However, in the film, Hilda’s dialogue is entirely made up of quotes from the women in my family. These quotes were either obtained through interviews or recording them going about their day (with permission). As such, this film is an exaggerated but accurate reflection of growing up in Denton with my family.
